Movie Review: American Mary (Mild Spoilers)
'American Mary' is the new movie from horror writers and directors, Jen & Sylvia Soska aka The Twisted Twins. They are also the masterminds behind the cult favorite 'Dead Hooker in a Trunk.'
American Mary follows student Mary Mason (Katharine Isabelle: Ginger Snaps 1,2,3. Freddy vs. Jason) as she becomes disillusioned with the medical world she once loved and admired. After she becomes unbelievably broke, Mary begins to spiral out of control in the world of underground surgeries. That is when she realizes this so called "lavish" lifestyle is doing more harm than good.
I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about this movie and I honestly had no idea what to expect from it except that I might not like it. After viewing it myself, I can actually say that I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this movie. I didn't think I would like it since Dead Hooker in a Trunk wasn't the best movie.
Let's be fair, you can't expect a movie with little to no budget to be freakin' amazing. It was however A LOT better than what I thought it would be and pretty entertaining. That being said I was excited to see AM even though I wasn't expecting to like it. The acting was well done, Katharine Isabelle did a great job as Mary. The Soska Sisters really improved their talents in script writing and directing and I liked how they had a cameo in the movie.
I really enjoyed the story line of this movie and it kept me entertained and drawn to it throughout the entire movie. I did like how instead of Mary giving in to being a victim, she decides to become a survivor and seek revenge on the people who've wronged her and she does it in style.
I am not a fan of rape in movies (who the hell is, anyway?) so I was relieved with how "tamed" the rape was in this movie. Do I agree with having rape in movies? No, but I do understand why they wrote it in since it's a huge part in the movie and it ties the story together.
The only two complaints I have with this movie is 1: I REALLY wish they would of shown the end result of the twins surgeries instead of leaving it up to our imaginations. 2: Why is this called American Mary when there's really nothing American about it? My good friend and fellow blog buddy, Maynard Morrissey over at Horror Movie Diary mentioned this very subject in his review of American Mary and I have to say that I agree with him on this matter.
This movie is called American Mary even though it's filmed in Canada, most of the cast including the directors are Canadian. I don't recall anything "American" being mentioned in this movie so I thought the titled was kind of weird. Beside those two minor complaints, I really liked this movie and enjoyed it and thought it was money well spent. If you're a fan of horror movies which I know most of you are and if you're a fan of the Soska Sisters, I highly recommend this movie.
It's fun, gory, entertaining and very well thought out and produced. However, this movie is the type of movie that you'll either love it or hate it. There's really no in between with this one. In my case I loved it. I do believe that the Soska sisters have a very promising future in a career of writing and directing horror movies. They are now the proud directors of the horror movie See No Evil 2 which is of course the sequel to the 2006 See No Evil starring WWF/E champion Kane who is also set to reprise his role as Jacob Goodnight.
I'll be sure to keep my eyes out for that one along with the rest of you. :) I give this movie 4 1/2 out of 5 Skulls.
